Over dit werk
A face made of pale sculptural fragments comes apart in mid air, each broken edge lined in gold, with torn paper drifting through the gaps where the features should be.
The pieces are not falling. Look at the spacing and they are holding position, suspended at the exact moment before either collapse or reassembly. Which one you see says more about you than about the picture.
The gold is confined strictly to the fracture lines. Gilding the surfaces would have made it ornamental, and ornament was not the point; the edges are where the meaning lives, so the edges are the only place the gold is allowed to go.
