She Reaches Up, Not Out: The Story Behind Our Rainbow Silhouette
A design story: why the figure has no face, why the colour comes from behind her, and why it also makes a good gift for someone starting over.

Most figure art with a lot of colour falls into one of two traps. Either the colour drowns the person, or the person is drawn so precisely that the colour becomes decoration around a portrait. We wanted the opposite balance: a figure you read in one second, and colour that does the emotional work. The piece that came out of that is a woman in a long gown, reaching upward, with a burst of paint opening behind her.
What you are looking at
A dark silhouette stands at the centre of the canvas, arms lifted, hair blown sideways as if she has just turned into the wind. Behind her, yellow, red, blue and turquoise paint radiates outward like a sunburst. Small dots of colour are scattered across the whole surface, from the edges of the burst right down to the hem of the gown, so the canvas feels light rather than heavy.
There is no ground line and no horizon. She is not standing anywhere in particular. That is deliberate: the moment is the subject, not the place.
Why she has no face
Like most of the figures in this collection, she is a silhouette. A face would tell you who she is, how old she is and what she is feeling. Without it, the viewer fills that in. That leaves room for very personal readings: a new job, a recovery, a move to another country, a decision that took a long time. A detailed face would have competed with every one of those readings.
The gesture carries the meaning instead. Arms raised and slightly open read as release rather than victory. It is closer to taking a deep breath than to crossing a finish line.
Why the colour comes from behind
We placed the brightest part of the burst directly behind her shoulders, so the figure is backlit. Backlighting does two things. It keeps the silhouette crisp, because the darkest shape sits on the lightest area, and it makes the colour feel like it is coming from her rather than being thrown at her.
The palette is warm at the centre and cooler at the edges: yellow and red near the figure, blue and turquoise further out. That gradient is what keeps the piece optimistic. If the cool colours sat in the middle, the same composition would read as cold and distant.
Where it works in a home
This is a piece for rooms where people arrive: a living room, an entrance hall, a salon, a studio or a therapy or coaching space. It needs a white or light grey wall around it so the colour can spread. On a dark or strongly patterned wall the burst loses its edge.
It is a portrait format canvas, so it suits narrow walls, the space beside a window or a column between two doors. In a living room, hang the centre of the canvas at roughly 145 to 150 cm from the floor. Above a sofa or console, keep the canvas width to about two thirds of the furniture width; on a standard three seat sofa that usually means the 60x90 cm size.
It sits well next to plain oak, white furniture and green plants. It does not need a second artwork beside it. If you want a pair, its closest relative in the collection is Colorful Dancing Woman, which uses the same idea on a black ground.
A piece to give
It also makes a good gift for someone at a turning point: a friend moving into their first flat alone, a sister who has finished a hard year, a colleague starting a business. It says something without spelling it out, and its colours fit most rooms painted in white or pale grey.
How it is made
Designed, composed and colour graded in house. This is our own composition, not a stock file and not a reseller catalogue image. Generative AI tools were part of the design process, and the result was then selected, edited, colour graded and prepared for print by hand, which is how every piece in this shop is built.
It prints on premium matte poly cotton canvas with archival pigment inks, stretched on a solid wooden frame with clean wrapped edges, low glare finish, hanging hardware included. Made to order at the production facility closest to your address and dispatched in two to five business days.
Sizes
Made to order as a stretched canvas in three portrait sizes: 30x45 cm, 40x60 cm and 60x90 cm.
