How to Choose the Right Canvas Size for Your Wall
A simple way to pick between 20x30, 30x45, 40x60 and 60x90 cm canvas prints, with rules of thumb for sofas, beds, hallways and desks.
Picking a canvas size is the step people get wrong most often. A print that is too small looks lost on the wall, and one that is too large can crowd the room. Our canvas designs come in sizes from 30x45 cm (12x18 in) up to 40x60 cm (16x24 in) and 60x90 cm (24x36 in), and many are also available at 20x30 cm (8x12 in), so there is usually a good fit for the space you have.
Start with the furniture, not the wall
A common interior-design guideline is that art hung above a sofa, bed or sideboard should be roughly two thirds to three quarters of the width of that piece of furniture. If your sofa is about 200 cm wide, aim for art that spans roughly 130 to 150 cm, either as one large piece or as a group. A single 60x90 cm canvas is a strong statement above a desk or console, and two or three 40x60 cm canvases side by side cover a wider wall.
Match the size to the room
- Above a sofa or bed: one 60x90 cm canvas, or a pair or trio of 40x60 cm prints.
- Hallways and entryways: 30x45 cm or 40x60 cm works well because people view art there up close and in passing.
- Desks, shelves and small walls: 20x30 cm or 30x45 cm keeps the piece in proportion.
- Nurseries and kids rooms: 30x45 cm or 40x60 cm is easy to hang at a lower eye level.
Orientation and shape
Our canvas sizes follow a 2:3 ratio, which suits narrow wall sections, the space beside a window or a stairwell. If you have a wide wall, hang two or three matching pieces in a row with equal gaps instead of forcing one oversized print.
Try it before you order
Cut a sheet of paper or cardboard to the size you are considering and tape it to the wall for a day. It costs nothing and it is the fastest way to see whether the proportion feels right in your light and with your furniture.
