Neon Wall Art That Does Not Take Over the Room
Most bright art makes a room louder. This one was built to do the opposite, and the reason is the black.

Most bright art makes a room louder. You hang it, the colours bounce off every other colour already in the room, and within a week you have stopped seeing it because your eye has nowhere to rest.
This piece is bright and does the opposite. The reason is the black.
What you are looking at
A woman mid movement, arms out, one leg lifted, painted as a solid dark figure. Around her, paint thrown in magenta, cyan, yellow and orange, caught at the moment it leaves the brush. The figure does not have the colour on her. The colour is what her movement did to the air.
That distinction is the piece. Paint a colourful dancer and you get decoration. Paint a dark dancer and let the colour be the consequence of her moving, and you get an image about energy rather than an image of a person.
The decision the piece depends on
The figure stays almost entirely black, with no facial detail and no costume detail.
We tried versions where the dress carried colour. They all failed the same way. Once the figure is coloured, your eye reads her as a subject, starts looking for her face, and the splashes become a busy background she is standing in front of. Keep her black and she becomes a shape, the splashes become movement, and the whole canvas reads in one glance instead of asking to be studied.
Black also gives the piece a job in a room. It ties the artwork to whatever dark objects the room already has, a television, a door frame, a chair, so it belongs rather than floats.
Why the splashes are uneven
Real thrown paint is not symmetrical. It is heavy where the brush started and thin where the wrist finished, with a few drops that went further than the rest.
The composition follows that rule. There is more paint on the left, where the movement began, and a scatter of small marks on the right that carry the eye off the edge of the canvas. Symmetry would have made it a pattern. This makes it a moment.
Where it works in a home
Above a sofa in a living room with otherwise neutral walls, in a home studio or practice room, in a hallway that needs one strong thing rather than a row of small things, or in a dance or yoga space.
It wants a plain wall and a little distance. Hang it where you can stand three or four metres back, because the splashes resolve into movement at that range and into individual marks up close. Centre at 145 cm on an open wall; above a sofa, leave 20 to 25 cm between the sofa back and the bottom edge.
One piece of advice: do not hang it next to other colourful art. It is a solo performer. Put it with black and white photography, or with nothing at all.
How it is made
