The 2027 Paint Colours of the Year, and the Wall Art That Goes With Them

The big paint brands have named their colours for 2027. Greens, softened blues and warm earth tones lead the list. Here is what each one asks of the art on the wall.

The 2027 Paint Colours of the Year, and the Wall Art That Goes With Them

Every autumn the large paint brands name a colour for the coming year. These picks are part forecast and part marketing, but they are useful all the same: they show which colours will fill paint charts, furniture catalogues and magazine pages over the next twelve months, and therefore which walls many people will be living with. This year the list is unusually consistent. Greens, softened blues and warm earth tones dominate.

The colours announced so far

  • Sherwin-Williams: Celery (SW 6421), a light, slightly yellow plant green
  • Dulux: Soulful Sage, a soft grey green with a silvery cast
  • Behr: Grounded (T27-01), an earthy olive green with a brown undertone
  • Valspar: Cottage Door (8004-38E), a balanced mid-tone blue
  • Glidden: Artifact (PPG10-16), a warm, smoky blue
  • Graham and Brown: Rose Earth, a dusty, earthy pink
  • WGSN and Coloro: Luminous Blue, a vivid lapis-like blue for fashion and products

Two big names are still to come. Benjamin Moore had not announced its 2027 colour at the time of writing, and Pantone traditionally names its colour in early December. We will add both when they are public.

The three themes

Green appears three times, in two directions: light and airy with Celery and Soulful Sage, deeper and earthier with Grounded. Blue appears in a calmer, greyer form than in recent years, with Cottage Door and Artifact, while Luminous Blue stays bright on the fashion side. And the warm earth tones, Rose Earth among the paints, continue the move away from cool grey that has been building for several years.

The common thread is a home that feels calm and lived in rather than showroom clean. That has a direct consequence for art: on these softer, warmer walls, artwork with some contrast and texture becomes more important, because the walls themselves are no longer doing the talking.

Art for the new greens

Light greens like Celery and Soulful Sage are easy to live with and easy to make bland. Art with navy, deep teal or copper gives them a backbone. Gold and Navy Couple sits well on Celery, where the navy anchors the light wall and the gold picks up its yellow side. On Soulful Sage, Teal and Cream Abstract continues the soft palette with more depth.

Grounded, the darker olive, suits warm metallic tones. Our Steampunk portrait in teal and copper was made for exactly that kind of wall: teal close to the green, copper bringing out its brown undertone.

Art for the softened blues

Mid-tone blues like Cottage Door and Artifact are calm by themselves. The art should add warmth rather than more blue. Rust, terracotta and orange are the natural partners because they sit opposite blue on the colour wheel.

Minimalist Portrait in blue and rust is the quiet option, picking up the wall in the hair and warming it in the shoulders. Blue and Orange Woman, a cobalt figure reaching for an orange sun, is the bolder one for a living room.

Art for warm earth pinks

Rose Earth and similar dusty pinks work with teal, deep green and charcoal, which keep the pink from turning sweet. Blue Figure, a deep teal figure on a warm terracotta ground, could almost have been made for this wall. Boho Sun Goddess, with its orange sun and dark sky, suits it in a living room or a reading corner.

A word on following trends

A colour of the year is a starting point, not a rule. If your wall is already painted, it is cheaper and easier to change the art than the paint, and a well chosen canvas can make last year's grey feel current. If you are repainting, choose the colour you will still like in five years, then use art to carry the more adventurous colours. Art is easier to move than a wall.
