Wall Art as a Christmas Gift: Who to Buy For and What to Choose

A picture is one of the few Christmas presents that is still in use years later. It is also one of the easiest to get wrong, unless you choose by person rather than by style.

Wall Art as a Christmas Gift: Who to Buy For and What to Choose

Most Christmas presents are used up, put away or forgotten by spring. A picture on the wall is still there years later, which is exactly why it makes a good gift and exactly why people hesitate to buy one. The worry is always the same: what if they do not like it? The answer is to choose by person, not by style. Think about who they are and how they live, and the right subject usually becomes obvious.

For a couple

Choose something that is about two people without being sentimental. Silhouettes, two figures walking together, an abstract piece built around a pair of forms. Avoid anything with names, dates or slogans unless they asked for it, because words on a wall fix a tone the couple may not want in their home. A monochrome piece is the safest choice for a shared space: black, white and grey sit with any furniture, and neither person has to compromise on colour.

For a parent or grandparent

Think about where they spend their time. A father who walks in the forest every weekend, a grandmother who keeps a garden, a parent who still talks about one particular holiday. Nature, wildlife and landscape prints work well here because they connect to something the person already loves. A misty forest or an eagle on a branch says more about someone who loves the outdoors than any abstract design could.

For a friend whose home you know

If you have been in their living room, you already know the colours. Choose a piece that picks up one of them: the teal of their sofa, the oak of their table, the green of their plants. Matching one colour is enough. Matching everything makes a picture look like a catalogue page.

For someone whose home you have never seen

Go smaller and calmer. A medium print in neutral or soft colours, an abstract or a simple figure, fits a hallway, a bedroom or a home office without anyone having to rearrange a wall. Large, bold pieces are the most impressive gifts and the riskiest ones. Keep them for people whose walls you know.

For a teenager or a student

This is the one group where bold works better than safe. Neon colours, pop art, music and graphic pieces suit a first flat or a teenage bedroom, where the room is meant to say something about the person living in it. A printable is a good choice here too, because they can print it again when they move, and students move often.

Size: the middle is safest

Pick from the middle of the size range. A 30x45 cm or 40x60 cm canvas fits almost any wall and is easy to wrap and carry. A 60x90 cm canvas is a statement present, wonderful for someone with a large empty wall and awkward for someone in a small flat. If you are unsure, go one size smaller than your first instinct.

Order in time

Canvas and metal prints are made to order, then shipped, so they need more time than something taken off a shelf. Check the delivery estimate at checkout before you order and leave a margin, especially if the present has to reach another country. December is the busiest month for printers and couriers everywhere.

The last-minute answer

If Christmas is close, a digital download is the honest solution. It arrives instantly, and it can still be a real gift. Print it on good paper at a local print shop, put it in a simple frame, and you have a present to wrap the same day. Or send the file with a short note so they can print it at the size that suits their wall. Either way, the person receives something chosen for them, not a voucher.

One line on the card

Write one sentence about why you chose it. Not an explanation of the art, just the reason it made you think of them. That sentence is what turns a picture into a present they remember.
