Wall Art as a Housewarming Gift, Without Guessing Their Taste
Art is a generous housewarming present and a risky one. The risk is manageable, and most of it comes down to size and subject rather than style.

A picture is a good housewarming present because it is the thing people put off buying. New flats get a sofa, a kettle and bare walls for a year. It is also a risky present, because you are choosing for someone else and hanging it in a room you may never have stood in. The risk is mostly avoidable, and almost none of it is about style.
Size is the real decision
A large piece is a demand. It claims the main wall of the living room and it has to win an argument with whatever they choose next. A medium piece is a gift. It fits a hallway, a bedroom, a home office or a gap beside a bookshelf, which means they can place it without rearranging anything.
In practice that means the middle of a size range rather than the top of it. A print around 30x45 cm or 40x60 cm is easy to place. A 60x90 cm canvas is a wonderful present for someone whose taste you know exactly, and an awkward one for anyone else.
Subjects that travel well
Abstract and geometric work. No one has to agree with it, and it sits next to almost any furniture. A composition in primary colours and clean shapes is a safer bet than a specific scene.
Texture and material: stone, metal, paint worked with a knife. These read as objects rather than as opinions.
A place with a private meaning, if you know the meaning. The city they met in, the mountain they walk every summer, the coast where the new house is. A landmark print is either the best present in the room or completely wrong, with nothing in between.
Subjects to avoid as a gift
Portraits of strangers, which are hard to live with and harder to refuse. Slogans and typography, because words fix a tone they may not want in their hallway. Anything with a joke in it, since a joke on a wall stops being funny in the second week. And anything explicitly romantic for a shared home, unless the couple asked for it, because that is a print they should choose together.
What to spend
For a colleague or a friend of a friend, a small print or a digital download is right, and there is no awkwardness about the amount. For a close friend or a sibling, a medium canvas is a proper present that does not look like an obligation. Save a large piece for people whose walls you have already seen.
When you have left it too late
A digital download solves the late present honestly. It arrives instantly and it costs less than the flowers you would otherwise panic buy. Print it yourself at a medium size and put it in a simple frame, so you have something physical to carry to the door.
The part people forget
Give it with the means to hang it. A picture leaning behind a wardrobe for eight months is a present that never happened. A packet of the right wall plugs, a hook, or an hour of your time on the drill is the half of the gift that actually gets it onto the wall.
And say what you picked and why in one line. Not a speech, just the reason. It turns an object into something with a reason for being in the house, which is the difference between a gift and a purchase.
