About this piece
A face emerges from a split in layered grey rock, lit by a thin vein of copper running through the strata, visible only because the stone happened to break along that line.
This is the counterweight in the collection. The other two stone pieces are pale and airy; this one is heavy, cold and deliberately unwelcoming at first glance. A wall of nothing but light neutrals goes flat, and something dark has to hold the other end.
The face was pushed as far back into the crack as it could go while still reading as a face. Make it clearer and it becomes a carving. Leave it ambiguous and the viewer does the work, which is what keeps a piece interesting after the second week.
