Over dit werk
A woman in a wide black hat turns her face into shadow while white smoke rises past her and resolves, without ever quite committing to it, into treble clefs and notes.
The notes had to come out of the smoke rather than being drawn on top of it. Painted clearly they become clip art; left half formed they stay what music actually is before anyone writes it down, which is the state this picture is trying to hold.
The palette is three things only: midnight navy, black and the white of the smoke. Music rooms are usually cluttered with instruments, sleeves and cables, so the wall is the one place that can afford to be severe.
